GLACIER BAY

May 20, 2000

In 1794 Glacier Bay didn’t exist – it was filled with ice. Ten years later, the ice had retreated about 40 miles. When ice breaks off a glacier, it is said to "calve" (calving is thought to possibly occur after an earthquake).

The colors in Glacier Bay were very clear and bright, though the pictures may not show that.

Glacier after a small calving – blue color is due to lack of nitrogen in ice.
