Dave
Asprey is an independent consultant working with technology startups
and VCs. He focuses on strategy, product marketing, business development,
and IT, with a strong expertise in web hosting, networking, monitoring &
management, security, and performance and availability.
Dave
taught for the University
of California at Santa Cruz Extension (www.ucsc-extension.edu)
for almost five years, where he built and managed the Web and Internet
Systems Engineering program. Leading Silicon Valley companies used
Mr. Asprey's program to educate their technical and business people
about emerging trends in e-business. Several
hundred working technical professionals have become certified Web
and Internet Engineers under the program, and thousands more have
attended classes in the program.
Dave
recently wrote a large portion of PriceWaterhouseCooper's "Technology
Forecast Volume II" available online at www.pwcglobal.com/tech-forecast
and has written technical and Internet "How-to" articles
for Home Office Computing, PC Novice, PC Today, and a few other
magazines, and actively reviews textbooks about e-business for large
publishers like Addison Wesley.
Dave recently completed
five years at Exodus Communications (acquired by Cable &
Wireless), where he was Director of Strategic Planning. In that
role, he worked extensively with senior executives to develop strategies
for entering new markets and was responsible for developing technology
strategy, identifying opportunities, and working with business development
managers to execute investment, partnering and acquisition transactions.
He spent time every week meeting with "bleeding edge"
startups who could have an impact on the internet infrastructure
space.
He joined Exodus Communications
in 1998 as a founding member of the Professional Services Group,
which grew to more than 1000 consultants. In the Professional Services
Group, Mr. Asprey created web site architectures and built teams
to support large-scale, highly redundant, scaleable web sites for
e-businesses. Previously, he was with 3Com Corporation as an Internet
Architect.
Dave's first start up
was a very early e-commerce company (circa 1993), which was profiled
in Entrepreneur Magazine, Home Office Computing, the Miami Herald,
and a host of other publications. Eventually, Mr. Asprey's company
shipped products to customers in 10 countries, including Australia,
Britain, South Africa, and several parts of Asia.
Dave volunteers as the
CIO of the Boys and Girls Club of the Peninsula, and is a founder
of a charitable organization dedicated to researching the causes
of aging and eradicating autism.
Dave lives in Los Altos,
CA, and earned an MBA from Wharton and a BS in Computer
Information Systems from California State University. His hobbies include anti-aging and alternative medicine,
mountain biking, and hiking.
